We evolved imagination to focus our attention away from our immediate environment and solve problems more creatively and objectively by mentally daydreaming about possible solutions and different possibilities in our everyday situation. Our imagination, in conjunction with our long term memory and pattern matching helps us to plan events, imagine our future positively and build on what we have already experienced.

Imagination is such a powerful tool, however, that, if misused, it can cause considerable suffering and waste an enormous amount of our time on this earth needlessly. Worrying, for example, by focusing and embellishing on the negative is a dangerous misuse of imagination.
